Infant funerals

When making arrangements following pregnancy loss, or following the loss of a child, we offer the same broad range of support and help, being guided entirely by the parent(s) or those looking after arrangements.

Planning a funeral ceremony for a child will carry its own particular sensitivities, and as with every funeral, each situation and set of family wishes is unique. We therefore approach each arrangement individually as we assist with planning.  For some families and depending on circumstances, there may still be a sizeable funeral. Others will opt for a smaller private family occasion.

The choices available for infant funerals and similarly broad as for an adult funeral and include decisions about:

  • Burial or cremation?
  • Whether the funeral should be lead by a celebrant, clergy, hospital chaplain or family.
  • Choices about dressing and coffin selection.
  • Following a cremation, a small amount of cremated remains will be available, whether to keep, inter or scatter.
  • Following a burial, a gravestone may be selected.
  • We can help arrange flowers or you can speak to a florist of your choice.

When arranging a funeral for a child, we charge a significantly modified cost of £195.00 within which we provide:

  • Our professional services, support and advice, helping with and submitting cremation of burial documentation
  • An estate car to convey the coffin, perhaps accompanied by parents to the place of burial or cremation locally.
  • We will provide a traditional white infant crib or coffin.
  • As far as practical, you can spend as much time in our rest rooms during office hours as you wish, with evening or weekend visits by appointment.

Where you choose an alternative coffin (alternative colour, picture coffin or willow), additional or different vehicles (ie specify hearse or limousine) or order third party service such as flowers, possible celebrant charges or other options, these costs will also be applied.

Social Security Scotland may make payments towards these and other costs and should be approached directly to discuss your eligibility if applicable.   Other sources of financial help may be available and we are always available to openly discuss any cost implications.

While some funeral directors may offer a “free” infant funeral, it is important to be sure of what this service will cover, and what costs may accrue for any personalised choices you wish to make.

Where further assistance or support is required as you journey through bereavement, we can signpost to specific organisations that may be able to help in your circumstances.

As with all aspects of our service, we will be pleased to offer advice, support or to discuss our services prior to making any commitment as to how you progress arrangements.

Some examples of coffin style, floral and memorial tributes are shown here. (Exact styles may vary as will delivery timescale.)
